Fall & Winter Walks in NYC: How to Keep Your Dog Safe and Comfy

Fall in New York is beautiful. But once the temperature drops, the sidewalks change fast. Cold concrete, rain, slush, and rock salt can be tough on your dog, especially on paws.

Here are our favorite tips for walking in the city this season, from our daily walks with Noodles.

1. Protect those paws

Rock salt and ice melt are everywhere in NYC once winter hits. They can dry out and irritate your dog's paw pads, and some dogs try to lick it off later.

  • Dog boots are the best protection. They keep paws dry and away from salt. Most dogs need a few short practice walks to get used to them.
  • Wipe paws after every walk with a damp cloth or pet wipe, even if you use boots.
  • Check between the toes for small stones, salt, or ice.

2. Layer up (for the right dogs)

Not every dog needs a coat, but many city dogs do. Small breeds, short-haired dogs, seniors, and puppies feel the cold much faster.

  • Choose a coat or sweater that covers the back and chest.
  • Make sure it fits well so it doesn't rub or slide around.
  • On rainy days, a water-resistant layer keeps your dog dry and comfortable.

3. Be seen after dark

When the clocks go back in November, the sun sets before 5 pm. That means many walks happen in the dark.

  • Use a reflective leash, collar, or harness.
  • A small clip-on light helps drivers and bikers see your dog.
  • Stick to well-lit streets when you can.

4. Keep walks shorter on very cold days

On freezing or windy days, take a few shorter walks instead of one long one. Watch for signs your dog is too cold, like shivering, lifting paws, or slowing down. When you see them, it's time to head home.

5. Keep the fun going indoors

Shorter walks mean extra energy at home. Puzzle toys, chew toys, and short training sessions help keep your dog busy and happy in a small apartment.
